10 gift ideas for guitarists (from €10 to €200)

Buying a gift for a guitarist is deceptively tricky. Anything to do with the guitar itself — strings, picks, a bag — they usually already own, and in exactly the brand and gauge they are attached to.

Under €25

1. A good nail file

Sounds like an odd gift until you ask a fingerstyle guitarist about it. Anyone who plays with their nails is constantly keeping the nail edge smooth — a frayed edge catches on the string and tears open mid-song.

Most use a cardboard file from the chemist that is worn out after three uses. A glass file lasts for years and seals the nail edge instead of fraying it. Small gift, daily use.

2. A capo

Lets you play in a different key with one click, without learning new chords. Almost every guitarist uses one, and almost every guitarist owns a cheap one that pinches or pulls the guitar out of tune. A good one clamps evenly and lasts.

3. A guitar stand

The dullest gift on this list and simultaneously the most used. A guitar in a case does not get played; a guitar on a stand in the living room does. Anyone who does not have one yet will use it every day.

• Strings. Everyone has their own brand and gauge, and the wrong choice never gets used.
• Picks in a random gauge. Same problem. Unless you know exactly what they use.
• A guitar. Unless you know precisely which one they want. You choose a guitar by holding it.
